Things to Do in Puri

Puri is a small city and itself is a district of Odisha and it is also a holy place where Lord Jagannath Temple took birth. It’s a coastal area situated on the Bay of Bengal and it 60 kilometres from the Capital state Bhubaneswar. There are several things to do in Puri.

Here are some interesting things to do in Puri:-

  1. Jagannath Temple: Birth place of Lord Jagannath in the form of Lord Vishnu, it’s one of the Pilgrimage destination out of 10. Jagannath Temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra/Chariot Festival, in which 3 principal deities are pulled on huge and elaborately pulled on temple cars. These gave their name to the English term Juggernaut. Unlike the stone and metal icons found in most Hindu temples, the image of Jagannath is made of wood and is ceremoniously replaced every twelve or nineteen years by an exact replica. Once, a year you should visit this holy place.
  2. Puri Beach: Puri beach is a sea beach which is in the shore Bay of Bengal and one of the tourist attraction and known for Hindu Sacred place it is 2 Km away from Puri railway station. Every year annual beach festival is conducting by the  Indian Ministry of Tourism, the city of Odisha, the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts  and the Eastern Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata.
  3. Raghurajpur Artist Village: Raghurajpur is a heritage crafts village out of Puri district, India, known for its master Pattachitra painters, an art form which dates back to 5 BC in the region and Gotipua dance troupes, the precursor to the Indian classical dance form of Odissi. It is also known as the birthplace of one of the finest Odissi exponents and Guru, Kelucharan Mohapatra. Apart from that, the village is also home to crafts like Tussar paintings, palm leaf engravings, stone and wood carvings, wooden, cowdung and papier mache toys, and masks. It is situated 14 km away from Hindu pilgrimage town of Puri, on the southern banks of river Bhargabi (Bhargavi). Visitors from Puri take the Bhubaneswar road, near Chandanpur, on NH-316, and upon reaching the Chandanpur Bazaar, they can take a right turn to reach Raghurajpur. The village is then around 1.5 km from Chandanpur.

Konark Beach: Just 3 Km away from the Konark Sun Temple, Konark Beach in Odisha (Orissa) is a nirvana for a beach lover since a beach visitor can simultaneously bathe in the warmth of the sun and witness the beauty of sunrise or sunset. Another beautiful sight is that of the spotting fishermen, grossly involved in their daily chores with the fish.
  5. Swargadwara: Swargadwar is the cremation ground of Hindus. ‘Swarga’ means heaven and ‘dwar’ means gateway, so literary Swargadwar is consider as the ‘Gateway to Heaven’. General belief supports the idea among Hindus to end their life in this holy place of Puri to get the accessibility to heaven for liberating their Soul and ultimately Salvation. Swargadwar is in the sandy beach towards the South western corner of the town. In every Amabasya God Narayana represents Lord Jagannath in visiting sea which is said to be the in-law house of the Lord,through this holy cremation ground. On this holy site situated the temple of Goddess Smasana Kali. Goddess Kali act as the guard of Swargadwar and stand as the proof for all Heaven going Soul.
  6. Sakshigopal Temple: SakhigopalaTemple formally known as Satyabadi Gopinatha Temple is a medieval temple dedicated to Lord Gopinatha located in the town of Sakhigopala on the Puri Bhubaneswar highway in Odisha, India. The temple is built in the Kalinga style of temple architecture.
  7. Gundicha Temple: GundichaTemple, is a Hindu temple, situated in the temple town of Puri in the state of Odisha, India. It is significant for being the destination of the celebrated annual Rath Yatra of Puri. While it remains vacant most of the year, the temple is occupied by images of the deities of Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra for seven complete days (total 9 days including the start and concluding day of Ratha Yatra) every year during the annual Rath Yatra festival.   8. Rath Yatra: Ratha Yatra also referred to as Rathayatra, Rathajatra or Chariot festival is any public procession in a chariot. The term particularly refers to the annual Rathayatra in Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal and other East Indian states, particularly the Odia festival that involve a public procession with a chariot with deities Jagannath (Vishnu avatar), Balabhadra (his brother), Subhadra (his sister) and Sudarshana Chakra (his weapon) on a ratha, a wooden deula-shaped chariot. It attracts over a million Hindu pilgrims who join the procession each year.
  9. Sudarshan Crafts Museum: Sudarshan Sahoo, sculptor was born in Puri in 1939. When Shree Sahoo developed Sudarshan Crafts Museum, Puri in 1977. The Gurukul system of learning relived the tradition again when Sudarshan Sahoo established Sudarshan Art & Crafts Village, Bhubaneswar in 1991 with the help of the Government of Odisha. The institution is a Training and Creative Centre for traditional sculptures made of stone, wood and fiber glass sculptures. He received the National Award for stone carving in 1981. His award came in the form of Padma Shri, awarded to him in 1988. He received the Shilp Guru Award 2003
  10. Nalbana Bird Sanctuary: Nalbana Bird Sanctuary or Nalbana Island is the core area of the Ramsar designated wetlands of Chilika Lake. It was declared a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972. In the heart of the park, one can see thousands of birds descending during the migratory season. The island disappears during monsoon season due to inundation only to emerge again in post-monsoon.
